Diploma thesis on human action recognition for driver monitoring

The Computer Vision Lab at TU Wien announces a research position for a

Diploma/Master Student

to work on the “UNISCOPE-3D” project starting in May 2026 (or later).

We are looking for a highly motivated diploma/master student of Informatics or Electrical Engineering (or other related studies such as Mathematics) with a background in computer vision and machine learning and a strong interest in assisted/autonomous driving applications. The successful candidate will work in a team of academic and industrial partners on the “UNISCOPE-3D” project, funded by the Austrian Research Promotion Agency (FFG).

The project targets the development of a 3D driver/occupant monitoring system in the context of assisted/autonomous driving. The work will entail the development or improvement of computer vision and (deep) learning models for 3D human pose estimation and human action recognition in in-cabin scenarios. As opposed to conventional 3D reconstruction using multiple cameras or special depth sensors, the project addresses novel techniques for (cost-efficient) depth estimation using a single camera (monoscopic viewing). The developed methods will be evaluated in terms of accuracy and efficiency using a variety of simulated and/or real test scenarios.

The topic of the diploma thesis will be defined in more detail in coordination between the student and supervisor.

We are looking for highly motivated candidates that meet several of the following requirements:

  • Excellent academic record
  • Strong background in computer vision
  • Strong background in deep learning algorithms
  • Strong interest in assisted/autonomous driving applications
  • High ability of algorithmic thinking
  • Good programming skills in C++ and Python

The employment will be for up to 20 hours/week with a maximum gross salary (according to the collective agreement used at Austrian universities) of approximately €1.300 per month (at 20 hrs/week).
